Qualifications

HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT?

Ignitia is successfully providing weather forecasting services through a robust portfolio of programs in Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso. In addition to reaching farmers directly through the region’s largest mobile network operators (MNOs) including MTN, Airtel, and Orange, we’re also a service provider to development organizations such as GIZ and Mercy Corps. The team is currently seeking a dedicated business development professional to build upon the existing portfolio of projects and support the development of new business opportunities in the region.

The Business Development (BD) Manager will play a key role in ignitia’s strategy to scale beyond our current 1.3 million farmer customers in West Africa and our newest country, Brazil. The BD Manager will work closely with the Chief Strategy and Growth Officer, sales, product, and implementation teams. S/he will be a dynamic participant in all aspects of business development, gaining exposure to the agtech startup, climate smart agriculture, and economic development ecosystems in West Africa and other expansion regions. S/he will:

  • Execute all aspects of proposal development, including coordinating complex efforts with dispersed team members, drafting and editing technical proposals, drafting staffing and management sections, developing and customizing past performance references, and strengthening candidate CVs. This includes proposal inputs as a subcontractor to large implementing organisations.

  • Maintain a pipeline of relevant and winnable opportunities based on donor forecasts and intelligence gathering efforts, this includes conducting a competitive landscape analysis for priority bids, and maintaining a database of prime partners and co-funders to assemble winning proposals and effective delivery teams.

  • Write short proposals, or concept notes, and develop budgets for non-competitive and co-designed opportunities.

  • Lead research and analytical efforts to create evidence-based program design, including conducting industry strategic scans and drafting illustrative business models and farmer P&L statements across a variety of value chains.

  • Research funders and partners in support of the capture process and conduct desk and field research as required to support program development and donor intelligence efforts.

  • Recruit consultants to support implementation teams and proposal development (eg technical writers).

  • Support knowledge management by synthesizing project evidence, success stories, and third party research in qualification statements for applicable value chains, sectors, and based on country portfolios.

  • Promoting best practicesand learnings throughout the company by tracking win rates, capture ratios, and other trends and success factors.

 

WHO YOU ARE

  • Bachelor’s degree in international relations, economics, business, technology, or other related field. Master’s degree preferred.

  • A minimum of three years of work experience in analytical and strategic roles within the private sector and/or development sectors.

  • Prior experience working in emerging markets. Work experience in West Africa and/or Brazil a plus.

  • Must possess strong presentation and writing rhetorical skills. Writing, editing, and proof-reading skills are needed to ensure internal and external documents are clear, concise, persuasive, responsive to partners and donors, and grammatically correct.

  • Proven ability to establish strong working relationships and partnerships with public and private sector actors, including international donors and local and international implementing organisations.

As ignitia’s Regional Program Director (RPD), you will oversee the successful implementation of new and existing programs in West Africa for both NGO project subcontracts and agribusiness customer engagements. S/he will be responsible for effectively collaborating with the sales team for customer and implementation handover, the product team for customer feedback and service improvements, and directly oversee the finance and admin team based in Ghana. S/he will continuously develop operational efficiencies and drive project delivery innovations to submit project deliverables on time and within budget leading to long-term service contracts with repeat customers.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Primary Functions And Responsibilities

Leadership: Oversee, support and coach the West Africa team in delivering their objectives whether it is Finance, Admin, or Project Implementation; develop tools and processes that drive operational efficiencies across the business; build technical knowledge and demonstrate thought leadership by committing to continuous improvement, pursuing workshops and webinars, reviewing professional publications, and sharing those insights broadly within the company.

 

Project Execution: Establish and maintain strong working relationships with customers, donors, and implementing organizations; effectively develop and execute activities against a clear work plan to deliver on contractual milestones and ensure high-quality and timely submission of reports and invoices to customers; develop and execute against a sound M&E plan that assesses outputs and outcomes across business and social performance indicators; actively problem solve and anticipate delivery challenges related to customer forecast receipt and use of information services within agribusiness operations; create knowledge management products and marketing collateral including best practices documents, ignitia product literature, implementation guides, case studies and video testimonials to capture lessons learned and promote ignitia’s brand.

 

Financial Management: Manage country and regional budgets, quarterly financial

planning, audits, and backstop and oversee the work of the Finance Lead (Ghana and Nigeria) and support reporting alignment with Swedish financial processes (supported by bookkeeper in Sweden); process international payments.

 

HR: Manage and provide timely and regular feedback to colleagues and direct

reports including annual performance management process; hire independent consultants and staff as required for project implementation.

 

Coordination: Collaborate with the sales and product teams to ensure smooth

customer service, satisfaction, and increase lifetime value where pilots lead to scale-up

 

Support: Support the sales team as needed for business development activities from

lead generation to presentations to follow-ups; support the CEO in board and investor reporting.

 

WHO ARE YOU? 

  • The RD will have significant management and international experience, be capable of successfully leading programs, teams, and operations across multiple countries, and have a passion for social entrepreneurship to create social and commercial value.

THE POSITION

The primary focus of your role is to ensure that ignitia realizes strong, profitable, organic revenue growth through products that deliver impact and value to the customer and end user. You will be supported by a small yet powerful team of scientists, marketers and technical experts. You will leverage your passion for the sector and deep understanding of product development and management to help design, build and manage a portfolio of high-impact products for our various customer segments 

You will lead the change in establishing ignitia as the lead provider of weather data across this market.

 

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Work collaboratively with multiple teams within ignitia (sales, project implementation, science etc.) to lead and deliver the projects to design, build and launch ignitia’s portfolio of products

  • Work with Head of Systems Development and Chief Science Officer to plan and prioritize product development 

  • Leverage insights on usage and feedback from end users to identify and implement product improvements as well as new product development opportunities

  • Work with the M&E/analytics officer to get a deep understanding of the target users. Consolidate feedback from team into concise scope and charter documents for products to clearly lay out the purpose, target audience, monetization and strategy of current and prospective products. 

  • Work with internal teams to define clear and specific product requirements. This may include technical descriptions, UX wireframes, and process flows. 

  • Work with the sales and communication team and providing source information for communication and sales documents.

  • Create and analyse user tests then feedback the testing results into product backlog for development

  • Manage product design, either by drafting prototype design or recruit and manage contractors doing design work

  • Manage product backlog in technical sprints by prioritizing the requirements in the backlog through feedback from respective stakeholders in the company. Ensure that the engineers have everything they need to maintain a high development rate 

  • Runs the responsibilities of a Scrum Master and Product Owner in the sprint cycles 

  • Be a champion of lean/agile product development in the company

  • Fill in any work gap required to ensure product success. This may mean assisting executive team in analysing new product requirements, drafting contracts, scoping contracts and work orders for consultants and managing consultant deliveries. 

  • Make sure products keep moving and developing to time, despite the hurdles
